The 2016 NHS trainee doctors contract introduced the new role of the guardian of safe working hours.  The guardian is responsible for overseeing compliance and safeguards outlined in the 2016 contract.

The role is applicable to all organisations that employ or host NHS training doctors using the 2016 junior doctor contract.  

Any organisation employing or hosting 10 or more NHS training doctors are required to have their own named guardian whilst those organisations with less than 10 NHS training doctors must make a guardian available through another NHS organisation.
